Perhaps you already know this, but the Audi 5000 was a Muricanized version of the Audi 100, which had scores of “features” added. Too many features. I lived in Germany and owned an Audi 100; I believe it was a ‘78. Front wheel drive and a big 100-horse carbureted four-cylinder and a four-speed manual. Plain Jane. Great car. The 5000, not so much, though the five-cylinder engines were fairly peppy.

I liked the K-cars. Dependable, practical, economical and roomy for their size. My mom had a Reliant 2.2L and the thing got 30+ mpg.

with an engine so far forward it wasn’t funny.
gotta be better than a K-car

All with Miata like curb weights.

The engine was very far forward. Not sure why that would be unfunny...
K was a practical, dependable car, roomy for its size and got good gas mileage. Sporty? Spiffy? Exciting? Not so much.

Wow, according to that, the Aries K was exactly as good as an Audi in every conceivable way.

And if you cherry pick even further, it’s basically a Bentley Mulsanne...

I had one of these, briefly. It was a 1981 wagon; brown no less.
It was the proverbial grandmother’s-church-on-sundays-car: It was my grandmother’s and she put only 30k on it by the time I got it in 2003. The problem was, it was still a 1981 Aries. It was horrible to drive, needed tires, along with lots of hoses that were old and cracked from sitting unused all those years. Brakes were scary, and cornering at highway speeds was... interesting. I think all that combined is why my parents convinced me to give it to a friend and buy a Honda.
But front cloth bench seats!

I love cloth seats, they’re underrated. And was it bad in a fun and quirky way, or did you just hate it?

I was awful to drive, but kind of amusing. I really had to adjust my driving style, and it wasn’t like I had been driving a BMW M3. More like, a 1990 Civic. But that thing handled well, at least. Still, my friends and I mostly liked it, because it was so... brown.
I think the nail in the coffin was from my parents, and their perception of it being unsafe.
